Possible link between tiny fluctuations in the length of day and large earthquakes

Our 12m radio telescope’s contribution to a recent publication by two American researchers

A statistically robust link between tiny variations in the length of day and an increase (albeit delayed) in the number of large (greater than 7 magnitude) earthquakes is claimed in a recent article reporting on the findings of two American researchers.  Paul Voosen’s article, ‘Sloshing of Earth’s core may spike major earthquakes’ is published in Science publication, 30 October 2017.

Through participation in observations run by the IVS (International VLBI Service) specifically designed to measure Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP) IRASR's 12m antenna regularly contributes to the precise measurement of the Length of Day (LOD) crucial to this research.
